Wow. This section felt SO eventful and was such a rollercoaster. The most impressive aspect of this book has been its ability to keep me on the edge of my seat. While I’m glad that I will be able to go to sleep better now that I don’t have to read about these gruesome murders, I must admit I’m going to miss reading this book.

Before I get into the plot, I’ve noticed a pretty prominent theme in this book. This book’s message is that you can’t run away from yourself. I know it’s very similar to what I discussed in the last post. But this section focused more on the person the individual is than just the individual’s actions. It is best shown through the main character, Makani. It sounds like she used to be a selfish and irresponsible person. However, this changed throughout the course of the book as she met new people and had some eye-opening experiences. She changed so much that, at the end of the book, she chose not to run from the killer and instead watched him to make sure he wouldn’t kill anyone else. The point that the author is making is that, her personality and values did not change by moving from Hawaii to Nebraska. She was changed by really living her new life, not running from her old one. You can never escape who you are, but you can make choices to change for the better.

As for the storyline, Chris, Ollie, and Makani found out that David stole a car to drive out of town, and then hitchhiked back into town. The trio was very scared to know that the killer was back in town and made detailed plans to ensure Makani and Ollie’s safety. However, these plans were thrown off when they picked up Alex and Darby and came to the realization that David was targeting talented people. Then figured out that a girl named Rosemarie had a past of winning barrel races, making her the probable next target.
They arrived at Rosemarie’s house -which was next to a busy haunted corn maze- just in time to save her from him. This leads to a big fight that results in Alex’s throat being slit (RIP (also side note- the way it’s written, it doesn’t seem like Makani is that bummed that her best friend died which I thought was crazy)) and David running into the maze. Ollie, Makani, and Darby chase after him, eventually catching up to him. David then stabs BOTH Darby AND Ollie in the chest and runs. Makani, believing they are both dead, follows him again. He tries to stab Makani. Makani runs from him. She climbs into a corn pit and he is about to jump at her and stab her. Then…

Darby shows up and knocks David over with a metal skeleton sculpture! Eventually, Makani kills David and the police show up. Chris runs off to find Ollie… and he finds him ALIVE!

It’s so crazy to me that this is the author of such a gruesome book. She seems so nice and innocent! I might have to read one of her rom-coms now to see if she’s good at writing that too!
I’m glad this book had a semi-happy ending. As difficult as the book was to read sometimes, it was a genre I hadn’t really read before and it was interesting to switch it up. I’m not going to lie, I will miss the crazy plot of this book. But at the same time, I’m also excited to keep reading the rom-coms I usually love.

P.S. Sorry for going meme-crazy 😓
